Film/ TV - Ferdinand

Ella and I had a date at the movies today - her first time at the cinema (milestone moment)! We went to see 'Ferdinand', a delightful tale about a flower loving bull who tries to avoid his inevitable demise in the bull fighting ring. He escapes, 'Casa Del Toro', the bull-fighting ranch and gets picked up by a flower farmer and his daughter, Nina. Ferdinand doesn't stay young forever, and soon runs into problems which threaten his blissful life in utopia.  Beautifully animated, this movie is a gentle romp, a bit long but has some lovely moments. The kids will love it!

Local Business - Les Gâteries Sucrées

If you're looking for a locally handmade, beautifully crafted, one of a kind, made to order cake, check out this fabulous local business,  Les Gâteries Sucrées. I was delighted with this cake for Darren, made during the fervor of the festive season. With 'Guinness' as the brief, Les Gâteries Sucrées produced this incredible work for an extremely decent price. Chocolate marble, with fondant icing and impeccable craftsmanship. I would highly recommend their work. Here's the link! https://www.facebook.com/lesgateriessucreesmawiedesign/?fref=ts

Art: Artist Focus - Robert Bateman

Robert Bateman is one of the most internationally well known Canadian Artists, whose work has received major recognition, shows worldwide and featured in numerous books.  From an inquisitive passion as a child, Bateman's acrylic works on canvas, were reproduced as signed, original prints as a means to raise money for environmental causes. One of these prints has found it's way to our store! Here's a close up of the detail on this fabulous ram. Such impressive detail and reverence for the subject matter. Come in store to check it out in person! Here are some great links! http://robertbateman.ca/ https://batemancentre.org/robert-bateman/

Life Tips - New Years Resolutions

Happy New Year! Hopefully everyone had a fun, (warm and safe) day welcoming 2018. The New Year symbolizes a new chapter, a great opportunity to change habits or re-focus our energies on something new. Experts suggest a gentle approach, to avoid 'resolution-bomb' and to visualize life one year ahead "without coffee/ with six pack abs/ volunteering in the community/ with new culinary repertoire" (insert resolution) to encourage success. Every year I attempt to give up lattes. (Not this year, it's too hard). I have however vowed to carve out time to email friends I love and miss.  Stay happy and healthy folks! See you in 2018! Love from all at Black Pearl Emporium See links for some great tips! https://globalnews.ca/news/3940146/tips-achieve-2018-new-years-resolutions/ http://abcnews.go.com/Health/years-resolutions-nutritionists-tips-staying-healthy-inside-2018/story?id=51745220

Lifestyle: Yoga for Kids

Yoga is a fantastic way to maintain great mental, physical and spiritual health. In order to establish some easy and effective coping strategies for our kids, we started introducing Yoga from a very early age and Ella is really enjoying it. Santa bought her a hot pink, butterfly embezzled yoga mat as well as a deck of Yoga flash cards for Christmas.  With childhood anxiety and depression on the rise and screens robbing hours from days, yoga is a great way to instill some powerful stress relieving life skills in our kids as well as keeping them active. Here's Ella trying out some new poses!   Here are the links on Amazon! https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/0811836983/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B002FMH4DC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Home Tips - De-cluttering tips: A Drawer A Day

We love this de-cluttering tip, it's way less intimidating than being faced with a whole house, even a whole room: clean out a 'drawer a day'. By taking 10 or 15 minutes to clean out a fridge compartment, a shelf, a dresser drawer or even a show box, you can start to reclaim your home. There's a lovely note about Feng Shui in the article linked below; clutter traps 'Chi' and the goal to liberate this energy and allow it to flow through the home, is to de-clutter. There's no time to lose ( and would make a great New Years's Resolution!) Talking of drawers, this is one of our favorite pieces in store, an original Henredon Dresser, 31"D x 20" W x 64"L. A perfect piece of furniture to help de-clutter your home! Here's the link for more de-cluttering tips http://www.hgtv.com/design/decorating/clean-and-organize/declutter-strategies

Local Interest: Frozen in Time Festival, Collingwood

Collingwood is truly a Winter Wonderland and becoming an iconic holiday destination. Despite the bitterly cold temperatures, the town is hosting an icy celebration,  'Frozen in Time', 28th - 30th December. As well as some stunning ice sculptures lining the streets of downtown Collingwood, Simcoe Street is closed to traffic, housing games, a welcoming open air fireplace and a thrilling 'ice slide' ( pictured below). The kids will love it, bundle up and get Frozen in Time! Here's the link! http://frozenintimefestival.visitsouthgeorgianbay.ca/
